Measuring Virtuous Responses to Peer Disagreement: The Intellectual Humility and Actively Open-Minded Thinking of Conciliationists

Abstract Some philosophers working on the epistemology of disagreement claim that conciliationist responses to peer embody a kind intellectual humility. Others contend standing firm or ‘sticking one's guns’ in face may stem from an admirable courage internal fortitude. In this paper, we report results two empirical studies examine relationship between and steadfast disagreement, one hand, virtues such as humility, courage, grit, actively open-minded thinking, other. We observed positive correlations measures conciliationism, thinking but failed find any reliable association steadfastness, grit. Our reveal there are at least important associated with (viz., humility thinking) vices (intellectual arrogance myside bias). These findings shed new light overall epistemic goodness perspective.
